Finding Your Calling

SEVEN STEPS TO A NEW LEVEL
Jay Maltby

1.Follow God into the Unknown
•All new greater trust and dependency on God like Abram moving to a foreign country. This new level could require a geographical relocation for us. (Genesis 12:1, Heb. 11:8)
•Follow God’s presence, the arc, like Joshua “you have not passed this way before”. (Joshua 3:1-4)
2.Sacrifice
•May cost us our friends or relationships as we are tested like Abraham w/ Isaac. (Genesis 22:1-18, vs.16 the blessing/reward)
•May cost our job like the disciples, Simon/Peter and Andrew were fishermen. (Matthew 4:18-20)
•May come at an inconvenient time like for those who said “Lord I will follow you wherever you go”. (Luke 9:57-62)
3.Flexibility
•God stretches us. This is necessary to prepare us for a new level. We must leave our traditions. The traditions of man make the word of God of no effect. (Mark 7:1-13)
•Don’t miss the fresh outpouring of something new. Don’t say “we have never done it like this before”. No one puts new wine into old wineskins. (Mark 2:22)
•We must be ready to pack up and move in God’s direction when God says go, like the children of Israel following the pillar of fire by night and the pillar of cloud by day. (Exodus 13:21,22)
4.Pruning
•New levels require changes. Some things we do, we “think” are fruitful, but God sees and knows the real potential of our gifts and talents. Dead works and works with little or weak fruit, like a rose bush, may be pruned. (John 15:2)
•The Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts to each one individually “as He wills. This new level may require flowing in new or different spiritual gifts by the Holy Spirit more than we ever have before. Don’t be in fear of this new outpouring. (1 Corinthians 12:1-11, 27-31)
5.Conquering Enemies
•This new level may require taking new territory by force. (Matthew 11:12) The journey of the Israelites to Canaan, the promise land, required battles and warfare. The 12 tribes of Israel had to war against their enemies to conquer the territory that God had already given them. (Joshua) How much do we really desire to promote to a new spiritual level? God will provide our strength. (Joshua 14:7-12)
•We may encounter spiritual resistance from our enemy. New level, new devil. (2 Corinthians 10:3,4) God provides our spiritual armor. (Ephesians 6:10-18) Draw near to God and resist the devil. (James 4:7,8)
• In this new level, God may tell us to do something that doesn’t make any natural sense, like Joshua marching around the wall of Jericho, but by faith, we still must do what He told us. (Joshua 6:1-21)
•To hear God’s voice, we must walk by the spirit and not by the flesh. (Gal. 5:16, John 10:3,27)
6.Remain Childlike
•Whoever humbles himself and becomes as little children is greatest in the Kingdom of God. Children run to meet their mother or father with arms lifted up, like pick me up and hold me. (Matthew 18:3.4)
•Children are trusting and do not complicate things. (Psalm 131:1,2) When we enter a new level, we must trust in God’s help even more, rather than struggling to accomplish them on our own. (Proverbs 3:5,6)
7.Keep the Faith
•Every new level will stretch our faith, but nothing is impossible with God. (Luke 1:37, Jeremiah 32:17,27) We need our faith “renewed” by hearing the WOG (Romans 10:17), so that we can believe God and what “appears” to be impossible. It is impossible to please God without faith. (Hebrews 11:6) Have faith as a mustard seed. (Matthew 17:20)
•Our faith will be tested during the transition to the new level. (Jeremiah 17:10)
•Our love walk and respect for authority will be tested, like David to still honor King Saul while being hunted by him. (1Samuel 26, Romans 13:1-7) God caused David, when he became king, to be greatly respected and honored because David reaped what he sowed. (Galatians 6:7-9)
•Do not despise the tests and trials that require the stretching of our faith, because this is where spiritual growth and maturity take place. We need this new strength in this new level so when the storms of adversity come we will not fail. (Isaiah 54:2,3)
•Faith is an action word. Exercise our faith and make it become strong by doing works and deeds that line up with the new level or vision that God has given us. (James 1:22, 2:17-20) (Proverbs 29:18)

THE PARABLE OF THE WINE SKINS
Jay Maltby

Luke 5:33-39 Jesus was answering the question “Why do John’s disciples and the Pharisees fast and pray often but Jesus’ disciples do not?” with a parable about the old and new wineskins. Jesus explained why He spoke in parables in Matthew 13:10-17, as He told His disciples basically that spiritual discernment is necessary to understand the principles of God. The mysteries or hidden truths of the Kingdom of God was not intended for the hard hearted, self-righteous, and spiritually deaf and blind religious people.

Charles Ryrie comments that wineskins, containers for liquids, if filled with new wine, if old skins lost elasticity, would burst when it fermented. The point is that the new teaching of the Grace of Christ cannot be contained within the old forms of the law. (John 1:17)

Lawrence Richards comments about the parable of the wineskins that Jesus intends to initiate a new era. The new wine will not fit in the container for the old: new ways of life will come that fit the new revelation that Jesus brings.

I like Henry Halley’s comment in Mark 2:18-22 “Halley’s Bible Handbook” as he states that it was probably occasioned by Jesus’ participation by Matthew’s feast which greatly surprised John’s disciples and the Pharisees and probably some of Jesus’ own disciples. Feasting was so different than the way that John the Baptist had lived. There may be times of crisis when times of fasting may be a proper expression of humility and penitence and religious devotion. There was special significance in it in the case of John the Baptist (see under Luke 3:1-20). But the religionist of Jesus’ day greatly overdid it. Jesus did not attach a great deal of importance to fasting as generally practiced (Matthew 6:16-18). Moses, Elijah and Jesus, each, fasted forty days. But it was in a period of great strain. Three metaphors, the bridegroom, the rent garment, the old wineskins (bottles made from goat skins), seem to mean that there are occasions when fasting is proper, but that is out of place in ordinary life, especially as a regular practice to advertise one’s holiness (Matthew 6:16-18), just to make a show of religion.

Today, I believe that Christians should fast and pray individually and corporately for our government, schools, city, church, family, salvations, self-spiritual growth and many other things. Fasting should not be intended to make God do something that you want, He is the same yesterday, today and forever, but I do believe that it gets His attention. He knows the sacrifice it is for us to put the fleshly appetite under and turn the TV and phones off and pray longer than our normal routine. Some Christians won’t bother to spend their time for extended fasting and prayer because of a lack of knowledge or being unconcerned about a matter. Sometimes if we want to see change and spiritual breakthrough, it is going to take a miracle by the hand of God. He is looking for someone who cares by showing it with prayer and fasting. Faith without works is dead. As Jesus pointed out, it is very important that we don’t announce that we are praying and fasting. Don’t let the left hand know what the right hand is doing. (Matthew 6:3). Sometimes it is hard to conceal that you are on an extended fast from food as it may conflict with banquets and church socials and eating events. Pray first about the eating occasion, noting that you don’t want an open show of self-righteousness, and receive God’s direction. He may tell you to let the Pastor or social director know “only” that you are abstaining from food, or He may give you an idea that would help maintain secrecy. God is only interested in the true motives and intentions of our heart. In Christ, we are a new creation (new wineskin) the old has passed away 2 Cor. 5:17. Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 3, “Everything has it’s time”. There is a time for feasting and there is a time for fasting. (end) Jay Maltby

INHERITANCE
Jay Maltby

Inheritance Definition - “Somebody pays a price that you receive for nothing”.
Many inheritances have been left, but not picked up because of a state of mind, a knowing but not receiving.
Many inheritances are not received because of a lack of knowledge of an available inheritance. (Hosea 4:6)

I.    The Holy Spirit’s primary role is to engage us to a greater level of revelation, “a revealing”. He wants us to shape the course of history. (Heb. 9:14,15)
1.Am I a slave or a king? Jesus calls us kings & priests. (Rev. 5:10)
2.What stops us from inheriting the role of living as kings & priests? Natural reasoning. As a man thinks in his heart, so is he. (Pvb. 23:7)

II. Jesus said, (Jn. 16:14,15), He (Holy Spirit) will glorify Me, He will take of Mine & disclose (declare) it to you.
1.Jesus has everything.
2.He gave up everything to become a man. (Jn. 10:18)
3.He re-inherited everything as a man.(Eph. 1:20)
4 He gave up everything to take on flesh & died in our place bearing what we deserved, so we could get what He deserved.(Rom. 6:4-11)
5.That’s our inheritance. (Eph. 1:17-19) A joint heir with Jesus Christ. (Rom. 8:14-17)
6.God WANTS to dwell IN us and to be filled with ALL His fullness and do more than we ask by His power that works in US. (Eph. 3:16-20)(Heb. 6:17)           (Jn.14:23)

III.God is opposed to us behaving like MERE MEN. (1 Cor. 3:3)
1.We have NOT received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit of God so that we can KNOW the things that HAVE been freely given to us BY GOD. (1Cor.2:12)
2 If we are CARNAL, we are full of envy, strife and have divisions among us. We are still babes in Christ and still on milk and not the meat of the Word.(1 Cor. 3:1-3)
3.The Holy Spirit lives IN us and wants to flow out of us. (Acts 1:8)(Rom. 8:9-11)(Jn. 14:16,17)
4.We have no excuse to walk in the confinement of a MERE MAN. (Rom. 8:30,31)(Jn. 15:22)
5.The Holy Spirit is trying to get us to ACT and THINK like who we really are in Jesus as a joint heir. (Jn. 14:26)(Jn. 16:13-15)

IV.    Let no one boast in “MEN” for “all” things belong to God. (1Cor. 3:19-21)
1.A man should not think of himself more highly than he should. (Rom. 12:3,16)

V.GIFTS are our inheritance such as teachers, ministers, mentors, the world, life, death, things present or things to come all are yours. We belong to Christ.       (the anointed one & His anointing) (1Cor 3:22,23)
1.God’s inseparable love in Jesus Christ is our inheritance. (Rom. 8:38) If we don’t KNOW that God loves us, we can’t continually walk in His love. Don’t          get mixed up with who our enemy is. God is not holding out past forgiven sins against us. It is not in a hidden file somewhere. Our past failures and                  victories can be used as a testimony for helping others and ourselves overcome. (Rev. 12:1) We overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our          testimony.
2.LOOK for God’s blessing of inheritance and give Him praise and thanksgiving for them, even the promises that we are still standing and believing for.(Ps.84:11) (Ps. 68:19)
3.Things to come belong to us. (Jn.2:4-11) Jesus’ time to be revealed with miracles as the Messiah had not come yet. It was intended to be reserved for           another day. Also the Samaritan woman at the well was a Gentile not a Jew. (Jn. 4:6-26) Salvation was for the Jew first then the Gentile. Also the                   Canaan woman with the demon possessed daughter. Jesus said “It is not good to take the children’s bread and cast it to the little dogs.” She said “even           the little dogs eat the crumbs that fall from the Master’s table. (Matt. 15:22-28)
4.They received something that was reserved for another day “by faith”. They pulled it across the timeline of the death and resurrection of Jesus and the         covenant of salvation for the gentiles was intended.

VI.GOD’S PRESENCE, the HOLY SPIRIT are our inheritance.
1.David learned that playing his harp and the sacrifice of praise ushered in the presence of God, and God’s favor. (1Sam. 16:22,23)(2Sam. 6:14,22)
2.When the Day of Pentecost came, they were all in one accord in one place. (Acts 2)
3.Paul and Silas were in prison singing hymns and praising God, all the prison doors were opened. (Acts 16:25, 26)
4.God is SEEKING those who worship Him in spirit and truth. (Jn. 4:23, 24)

DISCOURAGEMENT
Jay Maltby

WE ARE IN THE WORLD BUT WE ARE NOT OF THE WORLD. (John 15:19)
I.Understanding Discouragement As A Believer
A.Discouragement is an ultimate weapon that the enemy uses against us.
B.Overcoming discouragement is something that we must “LEARN”.
C.We are not BORN with the ability to overcome discouragement, but we are “MORE THAN CONQUERORS” through Jesus Christ who loves us. (Romans 8:37)(Rev.12:11)(John 16:23)

WHAT TO DO WHEN ATTACKED WITH DISCOURAGEMENT:
I.See Yourself As Overcoming Discouragement.
A.Envision the attack of discouragement as an opportunity to be an over comer. (Pvb. 29:18) : Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint.
B.Say to yourself “Why am I cast down or disquieted? I will hope in God, He is the help of my countenance. (Ps. 42:5,11; 43:5)
C.Face discouragement head on. Don’t ignore it like it isn’t there. Be steadfast, immovable always abounding in the work of God. Our labor is not in vain in the Lord. (1Cor. 15:58)
II.Seek God, He is Waiting For Us.
A.God is a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in the time of trouble. (Ps. 9:9)
B.Wait silently (no complaining) for God in expectation. He is my rock, salvation and defense. I will not be moved. (Ps. 62:5,6)
C.Say to the Lord my God and refuge “In You I will trust. (Ps. 91:2)
D.The Lord is our defense (KJV stronghold). (Ps. 94:22)
E.The Lord will Lead us if we will wait on Him. (Ps. 25:5) Wait Heb. 6960 qavah (kaw-vaw) To bind together (twisting); to expect; look patiently; tarry; wait on.
F.God will conceal me in His secret place in the day of trouble. (Ps. 27:5,8) Seek the face of God and the secret place in fervent prayer. (Ps. 91:1)
III.See God’s view.
A.God’s perspective is from kingdom to earth, not earth to kingdom. (Phil. 4:13) Sometimes discouragement is a lack of having God’s perspective or a wrong focus. A discouraged person has his focus on himself and sometimes isolates himself, and rages against sound judgment. (Pvb. 18:1)
B.God sees the spirit realm. (2 Kings 6:16-17) God opened the eyes of Elisha and his servant and the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire.
C.God sees the Big picture. (1Kings 19) (vs.3)Elijah fled in fear from Jezebel, (vs.4) Lord take my life, (vs.10,14) I have been very zealous for You; They have forsaken your covenant, torn down your altars, killed all your prophets and I alone am left. (vs.18) Yet I (God) have reserved 7,000 whose knees has not bowed to Baal nor kissed him.
D.Never panic. God is peace. (Col. 3:15) Let the peace of God rule in your heart and be thankful. We are called for peace. Peace rules. (Phil. 4:7)
IV.    See God's Solution.
A.Choose God's solution and not your own. We try to figure out things instead of waiting on God. Get in the Word and see who you are. Get God's perspective who you are in Christ and you will not be discouraged anymore.God's answers are usually simple. Don't try to come up with a plan of how God is going to deliver you. Stay in tune with God ready to move or go with Him. Flow with His course, like the children of Israel followed the pillar of fire by night and the cloud by day. (Ex. 40:36-38)
B.God's solution doesn't need man's logic. Many times man wants a logical solution that doesn't require faith. We can't explain the miraculous power of God. He gives us revelation. God is calling His people to get out of the worldly mentality into the kingdom of God mentality. (Matt. 6:10) Some things we as Christians just can't explain. (Pvb. 3:5,6) Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct you.
V.    Praise Attacks Discouragement.
A.Paul and Silas in prison. (Acts 16:25,26) Praise God when we are in the peak of emotional discouragement, even if there is no apparent breakthrough, will cause doors to open or speed up our breakthrough from God. "Complain and remain, Praise and be raised".
B.The joy of the Lord is your strength. (Neh. 8:10) Let them "SHOUT" for joy (Psalm 5:11) not because of joy.

WHO YOU ARE IN CHRIST
By Jay Maltby

Galatians 2:20 – I (you) have been crucified with Christ, it is no longer I (you) who live but Christ lives in me (you), and the life which I (you) now live in the flesh, I (you) live by faith in the Son of God who loved me (you), and gave Himself for me (you).

2 Corinthians 5:21 – For He (God) hath made Him (Jesus) to be sin for us (you), who knew no sin that we (you) might be made the righteousness of God in Him (Jesus).

                                                                  Attitudes                                                  by Rev. Maltby

An attitude is not happy unless it expresses itself, good or bad. A person’s attitude is based upon having life, or having life more abundantly. John 10:10 – The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
A person’s attitude often speaks louder than words. It is the spokes-person of their life.
Phil. 2:3, 4 – Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
Jesus’ attitude – Phil. 2: 5–8 – Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus Who be in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bond servant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in the appearance of a man he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.
1 Cor. 2:16 – For who has known the mind of the Lord? But we have the mind of Christ.
Romans 12: 1, 2 – I urge you therefore brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Four attributes that may influence a person’s attitude are:
a.)Ability – God given talents. What you are capable of doing.
b.)Motivation – Personal desires or wants determines what we enjoy or like to do.
c.)Attitude – determines how well we will perform a task. Pvb. 16:18- Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
d.)Insecurity – Holding back or not being “yourself” because of fear of man’s opinion of you. Pvb. 29:25- The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord will be safe.
Four attributes of Jesus’ attitude are:
a.)Selflessness – Matthew 26:39-42- Jesus prayed “Father if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me, nevertheless, not as I will but as You will.” John 6:38- For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
b.)Submitted – Phil. 2:8- Jesus humbled Himself to the death at the cross. John 13:5- Jesus washed the disciple’s feet.
c.)Security – Jesus wasn’t moved by what people said or thought. Matthew 23 – Jesus openly rebuked the scribes and Pharisees and called them hypocrites because of their unfaithfulness and self-made righteousness.
d.)Confidence - Jesus was confident in knowing who He was. John 14:6 – Jesus said, “I am the way the truth and the life, no one comes unto the Father except through Me. John 11:25 Jesus said to her (Martha), I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he die, he may live.
As followers of Jesus Christ, how can we expect our gifts, talents and abilities to flourish and excel without asking for God’s divine help and direction “before” we start each day?
James 4:2b – …Yet you do not have because you do not ask.
Proverbs 3:5, 6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path.
Proverbs 16:3, 9 – Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established. A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.
Psalm 37:5 – Commit your way unto the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.
Sometimes a person loses focus and direction from the Lord because of the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things cause confusion or being led astray. Mk. 4:19
James 4:7, 8 – Submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, purify your hearts and don’t be doubleminded.
God hates pride. A person with pride is like a person that has bad breath. Everyone knows except that person, and everyone keeps distant to avoid the foul odor. God also wants us to need Him like little children need their parents to take care of them.
Luke 14:11 – Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
Matthew 18:4 – … whoever humbles himself as this little child is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Proverbs 29:11, 23 – A fool vents all his feelings, but a wise man holds them back. A man’s pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor.
Proverbs 23:7- For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.
What is on the inside will eventually become on the outside, even if you don’t speak it, by your body language. Attitudes and actions speak louder than words. A person acts out and becomes what they are thinking. Eyes and ears are gateways to the heart. Be careful what you see and hear. People do not care what you know until they know that you care.
An attitude can be your best friend or your worst enemy. We must “put on” happiness no matter what the circumstance. Bad and good attitudes spread like a rumor and are also contagious. Attitudes are more honest than words. It draws or rejects people to or from us.
John 2:1-10 – The servant’s attitude when Jesus turned the water to wine.
a.)Whatever is asked you to do, do it with the right attitude like a little child, without questioning or pride.
b.)Do it even if you have a lot of problems, short of time or think that it is ridiculous. God will reward you.
c.)Do it even if you are not encouraged by man. God is your best encourager.
d.)Do it even if you don’t know the whole plan or process. (Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, David, Daniel)
You can fail and not be a failure. A person is only a failure when they quit.
Psalm 34:1 – I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall be continually in my mouth. (no matter how you feel)
a.)Speak positively “in faith.” Hebrews 11:6 - It is impossible to please God without faith.
b.)“Put on” a good attitude. Colossians 3:12 - …”put on” tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, …
